So one thing that keeps coming up in the Czech Republic is that wood houses are cheaper, or that a real, solid house must be made with bricks, concrete and mortar. It is really funny to hear those preconceived ideas on building a house that will last, in a country where so many people don't want to buy the old stone houses because they are too expensive to renovate.
Too expensive to demolish and then build new. It seems that the ideal situation for many would-be new home owners is a flat piece of land so they can do the same thing all over again, build a concrete block house on a solid piece of of very thick concrete slab. Sadly the notion of not increasing the CO2 footprint is not a widely discussed topic and the general public understand very little what that does to the environment. This video from a previous blog will give you the scoop on how bad that is for everyone. Sadly this beautiful country is one of Europe's leading polluters.
Fact is, an average Czech person that has saved and is planning on building a house today, can take a tip from the wealthy set. Get the house they want at their budget. Even though the wealthy and possibly famous celebrities can take the more expensive route with sooo much money at their disposal, and truly build any style house that they want with any material that they choose. Yet they choose.... yup, you guessed it, wood! Check this out, Drake, a famous rap music artist purchased a piece of land for $6.7 million. His new abode has a basketball court, saunas (yes that is plural since there will be 2), indoor pool and hot tubs. Toronto gets pretty cold, so that's a good call. Of course there is a movie theatre and an extensive array of bedrooms, bathrooms, dining and cocktail areas and more. Guess what, it is a wood frame house, er mansion.
95% of the houses in this article are wood structures. Some are small, some are big, but they all have the same thing in common, the warmth, flexible style and sustainability of building with wood.
Hands down, it appears that wood is the preferred building material of choice. Whether you are building a mansion, a boathouse or a cabin in the forest. Think Wood Build Smart!
